NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). It is a national-level entrance examination conducted in India for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate medical (MBBS) and dental (BDS) courses in government or private medical colleges across the country.
NEET was introduced by the Government of India in 2013, replacing several individual state-level medical entrance exams. It is now the sole entrance examination for admission to medical and dental colleges in India, except for AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) and JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research), which conduct their separate entrance exams.
The main objective of NEET is to ensure a standardized and fair selection process for medical and dental colleges, eliminating the need for students to appear for multiple entrance exams conducted by different states or institutions.
NEET covers subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). The exam is conducted in an offline (pen-and-paper) mode, where students have to answer multiple-choice questions within a specified time frame. The questions are based on the prescribed syllabus of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for Classes 11 and 12.
The NEET score is used by various government and private medical colleges across India as the basis for admission into their MBBS and BDS programs. The counseling and seat allocation process is managed by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats and by respective state counseling authorities for state quota seats.
NEET is highly competitive, with a large number of students appearing for the exam each year. It is essential for students aspiring to pursue a career in medicine or dentistry in India to prepare diligently for the NEET examination to secure admission to reputable medical and dental colleges.
